A Journey of Faith — A Documentary Journey to Naina Devi Temple

A Journey of Faith is an observational documentary by Raman Rishi Dwivedi, capturing a journey to Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh. Through breathtaking mountain landscapes, the pilgrimage, local markets and everyday human encounters, the film explores the beauty of the journey beyond the destination.

Some journeys are about reaching a destination. Others are about the people we meet, the places we pass through and the moments that stay with us long after we return.

Through mountain roads, drifting clouds, temple pathways, local markets and everyday human encounters, the film explores the experience of a pilgrimage beyond the shrine itself.

The Journey Begins in the Mountains

The film opens with the mountains and the changing landscape along the road. Clouds move across distant ridges, revealing glimpses of the terrain as the journey unfolds.

Rather than rushing towards the destination, the camera takes time to observe the surroundings. The road becomes part of the experience, setting the pace for a journey that is as much about looking and feeling as it is about arriving.

Eventually, the road gives way to the climb towards Naina Devi Temple.

The People Along the Path

As the ascent begins, another world gradually reveals itself.

Pilgrims make their way towards the shrine. Shops display colourful chunari, flowers, prasad and devotional offerings. Shopkeepers attend to their work, families walk together, and small exchanges take place along the route.

The camera observes a young girl sitting beside a banner for a bhandara, a woman exchanging coins, and the everyday activity surrounding the pilgrimage.

These encounters are an essential part of the film. A sacred destination is also surrounded by ordinary lives, livelihoods and human connections.

For the people who live and work here, the pilgrimage is not simply a visit. It is also part of the rhythm of everyday life.

Arriving at Naina Devi Temple

As the climb continues, the temple gradually comes into view.

The trident, the bells, the exterior architecture and the people approaching the entrance become moments of quiet anticipation.

The camera remains outside the temple, respecting the restrictions on filming within the sacred space.

There are experiences that can be recorded, and others that belong to the person experiencing them. Sometimes, allowing a moment to remain unseen can be just as meaningful as showing it.

Beyond the Shrine

Stepping away from the temple, the view opens towards the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The atmosphere changes. The climb and the anticipation of arrival give way to happiness, openness and reflection. The mountains, clouds and expansive views offer a moment to pause and appreciate the journey.

But the film also looks beyond the familiar images of a pilgrimage.

Construction work continues. Monkeys move around the pathways. An empty kund sits quietly within the surroundings. Security personnel, children, shopkeepers and visitors carry on with their day.

These observations bring another dimension to the documentary. A place is never defined by its most recognisable landmark alone. It is also shaped by everything that exists around it.

The Everyday Moments That Remain

The descent brings the camera back among the people.

A man reads his newspaper. Security personnel smile as visitors pass. Shopkeepers arrange their goods and welcome the steady flow of people through the market.

There are small gifts, offerings for home temples, familiar gestures and brief encounters.

Nothing needs to be extraordinary to be worth noticing.

Through these everyday moments, the film moves beyond a conventional account of visiting a temple. It becomes an observation of the relationship between a place and the people who give it life.

A Journey That Stays With Us

As the journey returns to the mountain roads, the clouds and distant ridges appear once again.

The visit has ended, but the experience remains in the memories gathered along the way: the landscape, the people, the climb, the temple and the quiet moments in between.

For me, documentary filmmaking is not only about showing a place. It is about spending time with it, observing what unfolds and allowing the images to tell their own story.

With A Journey of Faith, I wanted to capture a personal visit to Naina Devi Temple through an observational lens, allowing the landscape, the pilgrimage and the everyday life surrounding it to come together naturally.

Because sometimes, the meaning of a journey lies not only in where we arrive, but in everything we notice along the way.
